Cartier Replica Watches - A Brief History

The name Cartier is recognized throughout the world as one that defines the ultimate in jewelry and watches. Some of the company’s watches are so elegant that they could be defined as jewelry themselves.

The Cartier legend began informally in 1904 when Louis Cartier (1875-1942) designed a watch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian who was one of the early pioneers of aviation. It is from this early design that the classic model Cartier Santos was born. Sales of the Santos model began in 1911.

Louis’ son, also called Louis Francois Cartier (1819-1904) carried on the family tradition by also becoming a goldsmith apprenticing under Adolphe Picard and eventually succeeding him following Picard’s passing in 1847. Louis then established the company that would carry his name. In time, the name Cartier would become well known among the citizens of Paris and throughout the world.

Cartier was a major influence in persuading the Parisian aristocracy to accept the idea of wristwatches for men. The Santos was hailed as a watch that the adventurous gentleman was could wear in all aspects of his life. The "Tank" wristwatch introduced in 1917 during the First World War is Cartier's most famous model.

In 1874 Alfred Cartier (1841-1925) took over the company from his father Louis Francois. Alfred's three sons - Louis, Pierre and Jacques - would in time turn the business into a global operation. Branches were opened in London in 1902 and New York in 1909, followed by branches in Moscow and the Persian Gulf and eventually Geneva, Hong Kong and Munich.

Cartier wristwatches incorporate a variety of shapes including, square, round, tonneau tortue, oval, and rectangular, providing a wide selection, one of which is bound to meet the approval of even the most discerning customer. Their designs are classic and modern at the same time. A Cartier watch can always be relied upon to make a fashion statement.

Cartier is known for quality in their watch cases, dials and movements. Cartier customers return time and again as they know that nothing beats the magic of wearing a Cartier creation.

Cartier Watches and Time

The House of Cartier, a true dynasty of style, elegance and fine craftsmanship, was founded in 1847 by Louis-Franois Cartier, master jeweler to Europe's crowned heads. By the early 20th century, his three grandsons, Louis, Jacques and Pierre, were successfully managing Cartier boutiques in Paris, London and New York.

The first true Cartier wristwatch, the Santos, designed by Louis and named for Alberto Santos-Dumont, a dashing Brazilian aviator, was introduced in 1904. Jeweled wristwatches followed soon after in 1906. In 1910, Louis created and patented the deployant folding clasp. 1917 saw the introduction of the famous Cartier Tank watch. Long regarded as the single most important and influential watch design of the 20th century, the distinctive timepiece was designed in tribute to the Allied Tank commanders who helped defend France during World War I.

In 1933, Cartier was commissioned by the Pasha of Marrakech to create a watch he could wear while swimming. As one of the earliest truly water-resistant designs, the watch featured an attractive round case of solid gold.

Today, the company's watch designers draw on the astounding design archives left by Louis Cartier, the design genius responsible for many of the house's signature innovations, patents and collections. Most of the contemporary Cartier collections are based upon Louis distinctive design classics such as the Santos, the Panther, the Bagnoire, the Pasha, the Tonneau, the Diabolo, and the Tank. Introduced in 1996, the Tank Francaise is widely regarded as a contemporary model of horology and design mastery. Available in three sizes and offered with a variety of movements from quartz to automatic, the Tank Franaise chronograph features a perpetual calendar and automatic time zone changing capability.
