Watches - A Brief History
The family history of
the Bvlgari family begins in the mid 1800’s when Sotirio Bvlgari began
a career as a silversmith in Greece. In 1889 Sotirio left Greece to move
to Italy, first spending a few months in Naples then moving on to Rome. It
was here that he opened his shop at Via dei Condotti 10. The shop was named
Old Curiosity Shop and catered in a large part to tourists from Britain and
America.
Although he did try a
foray opening a store in St. Moritz and other locations he eventually consolidated
all his business at the Via Condotti address in order to excel at producing
fine jewelry. This store remains the flagship store to this day. It was here
that the history of Bvlgari watches begins.
During the early 1900s
Sotirio was joined by his two sons Giorgio and Constantino who acquired a
serious interest in precious stones and proceeded to learn the craft of the
trade. When Sotirio passed on in 1934 the business fell to his sons who proceeded
to enlarge and refurbish the store.
With the advent of the
Second World War came an important turning point in Bvlgari history. Under
the direction of the Bvlgari brothers the business moved away from French
influence and turns more toward the creation of pieces influenced by classical
Roman style as well as Italian Renaissance and 19th century Roman influence.
During the 1970’s
the Bvlgari the company became international with over 155 stores existing
today in such cities as New York, Monte Carlo and Paris. It was also during
this period that the Bvlgari-Bvlgari watch was created. This model became
the classic watch and continues to be their most popular model to this day.
In 1980 the Bvlgari factory
known as Bvlgari Time was established in Neuch&acric;tel – Switzerland.
It is here that today’s Bvlgari watches are manufactured. The line
includes many models including sport watches, classical watches and other
timepieces. The 1980’s also saw the business pass into the hands of
Giorgio’s sons Paolo and Nicola who became Chairman and Vice Chairman
respectively. They have gone on to expand the company even further as they
moved into the 1990’s.
Today the company is listed
on the Milan and London stock exchanges and is still continuing to grow including
the building of luxury hotels and resorts in conjunction with the Luxury
Group.

an ancient family of Greek silversmiths whose activity began in the small
village of Epirus, where Sotirio, the founder of the family, made precious
objects in silver.
In the mid-19th century Sotirio emigrated to Italy where in 1884 he opened
his first shop in via Sistina in Rome.
With the help of his sons
Costantino and Giorgio, in 1905 he inaugurated the shop in via Condotti,
which still today is Bvlgari's flagship store. Pay a virtual visit inside
the Bvlgari flagship store in Rome, Via Condotti.
During the first decades of the 20th century, the two brothers developed a
passionate interest in precious stones and jewels, gradually taking over their
father's role.
During the 50's Bvlgari
moves away from the strict disciplines of the dominant French school to create
its own unique style.
The 1970's mark the beginning
of Bvlgari's international expansion with the opening of their first overseas
store in New York, and in Paris, Geneva, and Monte Carlo.
Today Bvlgari has 155
stores throughout the world. In the early 1990's, Bvlgari Parfums is established
in Switzerland marking the Group's entry in the high-class perfume market.

system and the International SEAQ in London.

by an original design and top quality manufacturing. The first collection of
Leather bags and Eyewear are launched in 1998, while table and giftware complete
Bvlgari's diversification program in 1999.

Nicola Bulgari, respectively Chairman and Vice-Chairman, together with their
